Depending on the amount of overhang you feel comfortable with, I would recommend a base size of approximately 40" W x 40" L x 28" H for a dining height application, then made from 3" or 4" square tubing. You can read a little more in our Base Sizing Guide for some additional information, but that size base, depending on how you configure the base relative the square shape of the top, would leave you with about 16" to 20" of overhang all the way around. The base could be made larger if you feel the top needs more support from the base, but for a stout wood top, 16" to 20" of overhang shouldn't be an issue.
