As a general rule of thumb, glass tops are typically rated for about 12" of overhang. That would mean you should have a base size that is at least 17" wide x 48" long. For standard dining height applications, the bare minimum width recommended for stability is 18". We typically recommend going slightly over that size to provide a little extra security against tipping, so I would recommend a 20" base width. You can read more in our Base Sizing Guide for additional information on how to properly size your base.
On another topic, by default the Hourglass Style Metal Table Base is made for square or round tops, so the length and width are the same. We can make the Hourglass Base to be asymmetric so that the length and width are different, to match the recommendations above, but that would be a custom order. If you are interested in moving forward with that option, please Contact Us. Otherwise you can apply those dimension recommendations to most of our other bases if you are looking for a different design.
